How We Started – A Saree, A Song, A Spark! 

 

The seed for Raag Varnam wasn’t sown in a boardroom. It first saw the light in a quiet moment one of those slow, emotional mornings where you open your mother’s old trunk, unfold a faded saree, and feel like you’ve just uncovered a piece of your own history.

It started with the idea of longing to bring back the grace, the rituals, and the silent power that came with draping a saree. To reimagine the saree not as something preserved for special days, but as something personal, poetic, and present.

 

As an old-school Indian soul deeply moved by art, storytelling, and Indian music, we kept coming back to this idea:

 

What if we could blend the raag of classical melody with the varnam of vivid colour that tell timeless stories through sarees?

 

So there we began small.

Sketches on paper. Conversations with weavers. Trips to heritage towns.

And most importantly, hours of listening

Listening to looms, To artisans, and To the soul of fabrics.

 

What we found was magical:

✨ Grandmothers who still remembered the name of the weaver who made their bridal saree.

✨ Women who cried while draping their mother’s saree years after she had passed.

✨ Young brides who longed for something rooted, something real.

 

That’s when I knew  Raag Varnam was not just a brand. It was a revival.

A movement to bring depth, feeling, and legacy back into how we dress

The journey then started by collaborating with a handful of weavers across India, people who understood emotion in every motif, and told stories in thread and texture.

Each saree we designed felt like composing a piece of music & our souls slow, layered, and meaningful.

 

What began as a personal expression has now become a shared journey with every customer, every saree, and every story stitched into this growing family.

 

We didn’t start as a fashion label.

We started with emotion. With memory.

And that’s what we’ll always return to.

We're Milan & Raiyani, the heart behind Raag Varnam.

This brand is our tribute to every woman who finds herself in six yards of fabric wrapped around her with confidence, rooted in her culture, and radiating her legacy. 

Raag Varnam was born out of our passion for culture, colour, and storytelling. 

We wanted to build something that didn't just sell sarees but shared their soul. A place where tradition met tenderness, and heritage found a home in modern wardrobes.

Every collection is a reflection of the sarees we wished existed, bold in design, soft in essence, and rich in narrative.
